RPG Maker XP World Map Tile Set

Greetings and salutations, fair people of RPG Town. I have completed the lengthy task of producing a comprehensive world map tile set for RPG Maker XP.

A frontier settlement. This screenshot shows a town and a fortress surrounded by a wall, mountains and the sea for 3 directional defense. Several crop fields are in the land between.

Another castle, this time in a barren land.

A settlement by the sea. Two ship variants, a sloop and war galleon, are docked.

This ship didn't fare as well as its other naval counterparts. This sloop ran aground near a beach.

A desert region.

A Persian-inspired city with naval fleet. Note the new vessel, the pinnace.

The obligatory snow region. Ice floats in the sea.

Since the tile set is over 16,000 pixels tall, I won’t be displaying it here, but you can download it from here.

Now for the yucky bit. It’s never pleasant laying out “terms and conditions”, but I’m afraid I must. These tile sets are completely freeware. I do not expect any mention in anybody’s credits, nor do I require any other acknowledgement. It would be my joy to see these tiles used in a range of projects and that’s all I need in return. Of course, if you do release a project using them, I’d be delighted to know about it (us pixel artists love to know our work is appreciated), but that’s entirely up to you. However, I would ask that you do not attempt to take credit, in full or part, for my efforts; it would be awfully disappointing if someone tried to take credit they didn’t deserve. You may edit the sets until your heart’s content, but to claim they’re entirely your own work is a cardinal sin. That is all part and parcel of any graphics work, though, obviously.

Additionally, though, this chipset is exclusive to RPG Palace. As a staff member, I’ve worked hard on this resource for the purposes of improving the site and increasing its prestige in the community in whatever ways are available to me. It shouldn’t be inconvenient to anyone to visit RPG Palace to download the resource.

This is incredible. Great example map, too. I hope you're going to make others!

The size and quality of this are both awe inspiring. The towns and buildings in particular look amazing, better than any other 2D worldmap that comes to mind.

Forget tileset, this bugger's a work of art =P. Honestly, it's just so.....big yet surprisingly detailed; you must have spent ages on some of those cities especially.

If I were to say one thing though, it's that some of the mountains don't match up perfectly; aside from that it's graphically perfect.

Those are amazing. The amount of detail, especially on the cities, is awe-inspiring, for lack of a better term. Very good job Inq.

I was going to mention the mountains too, but I've never seen them match up well in any chipset that comes to mind, really.

In any case, other than that, it's an amazing work, Inq. Your skills continue to improve exponentially. I can't wait to see the next release, be it monster, chipset, or whatever.

This menace must be stopped! Defend the Core at all costs!

Like it has been said the mountains put a great dent in the inspiring beauty of this set. Likewise the inner corners of the coastal cliffs add to this dent. They just look horriblely unnatural.

Aside from those major things, I find nothing wrong with it. In fact the Cities are stunning, and they're stunning look made it difficult for me to realize the problems with the mountians and coastly cliffs.

Nice work so far. heh Keep it up and we'll really start to need to judge your work on professional standard.

I dunno... I think... I think......... yeah I think the mountains are fine the way they are. You have my support re: the mountains. It's a very solid looking tileset. It seems like it would be fun to use.

0.o It looks amazing indeed. The city's look as if you made a city map in rm2k, zoomed out on it, and took a screenshot. *Goes to mess with it*

hrmm now that I look on my own computer screen.. it doesn't look as bad mountian wise.. though still needs to be touched up

and know I notice that the shading on the palm and pine trees is overly dark.. especially compared to the others.

I click download and it takes me to a page that shows dowload stats and comments. I click the little, xxx Dowloads link and it takes me to the RPG Palace logo and adds another count to the # of downloads. I haven't actually downloaded the tileset.

That's where you should click. The logo is an anti-hotlinking placeholder. If your referer is the Palace, which is will be if you're browsing to it, you shouldn't have trouble downloading it. Don't copy and paste the link. I've tried with Firefox and Internet Explorer, works just fine. If it's still a problem, let me know.

I don't see what I'm doing wrong :'( I want the tileset.

EDIT: I've looked over other tilesets and can only download ones Inq didn't make.

So in essence I can't download any of God's Land.

Hey dude, awesome work! I have a problem though. I had done a few things with 95 but I am very new to XP and I can't quite figure out how to use this set. I import the tileset with the resource manager but there is a red dot beside the names of the set while the other ones have blue and I can't seem to use them in a map at all.

I realize that I am probably just handicapped and there is an easy solution to this all, so if someone can help, please do.

Thanks,

Bradley

As far as I can tell, the red thing just means its an imported file
To use it in a map, go to database, tilesets tab, increase the array size by 1, click on the new tileset. click on the arrowy thing nest to tileset file, and click on the filename. Hooray, a tileset for ye! This is how I did it, in excruciating detail, and I've got it working.

First post, and I'm already helping! Go me!

However, I have a problem of my own. Whenever I use the second layer, the BLUE BACKGROUND OF DOOM shows up. So, my roads are surrounded by random blue stuff, which kinda detracts from the quality a little

Another noobish help request.

Inq, you do awesome work. I love this tileset and I am defininately going to use it for my game. However, is it possible to make a few additions? I don't know about everyone else, but for my game I have several different realms that require specific graphics.

I need a fire based map that looks like it's underground with volcanoes, lava rivers, craters, stalagmites, etc. Houses need to look like they are carved from rock or be like a pueblo design.

I also need a sky map with floating cities and stuff like the Kingdom of Zeal in Chrono Trigger.

Finally I'm looking for an underwater style map with kelp forests, coral formations, etc. The buildings should look like domed cities.

So is there any way I can get an Inq style tileset in these themes? I know it's a lot of work and I am more than willing to pay anyone for their time to create these tilesets. Please send me a PM if anyone can do this.

Many thanks,

Sytem

Great work on the tileset Inq, but I'm having a problem getting it on my computer. Everything is fine except for the WorldMap file (the one I really need, of course). RMXP gets an error everytime I try to import it and PhotoEditor claims it's got an illegal height. Actually, see for yourself. I guess my question is, could someone send me a working copy of this file? I'd really appreciate it. I've tried downloading it on every computer I own and a couple at work and I couldn't get it to work anywhere.

[Edit- when I checked my link, I was able to zoom in on the pic and it looks fine. But when I put it in RMXP, I get "Critical Error C0000005 at address 004B52A8" has anyone else run across this?]

Still getting an error when I try to import. I think it doesn't like the height, cause I can break it down and it ports fine. I'd be willing to bet it's my computer's fault, its one true purpose in life seems to be making sure everything I do with it is as difficult as possible. I was, however, able to trick it by just dropping the tileset into the appropriate folder through Explorer (my computer may be evil, but its not real smart...) Thanks.

I believe this came up recently in another thread- the solution was that you should free up resources when importing this tileset, so close ALL antivirus sofware, messengers, internet pages ...etc.

Alright. Now that I'm posting here, I should show you guys some power of the customization set.

These are towns that I personally built around the landscape. The metal coastlines are my creation, as well as the blue mountains. I noticed the mountain problem too, and hence I fixed it. When I'm done fixing it (I have to stop being lazy) I'll post it up for you guys.

Without further ado, here's the towns I've made using the very powerful customization set.

Not to brag openly about how great my game is going to be by showing you what effort the towns got, here's the Japanese town now:

Remember that you, too, can make towns that look as good as this. And truth be told, I never even applied shadows, so it really isn't as good as it COULD be. But I'm too lazy for SHADOWS, dammit!

Mewsterus, those are some nifty maps you got there. Your usage of Inq's World Map is quite stunning, however, some problems.

1. In the city, you see the town grounds, but they look a little odd to me. It could be the map or whatnot, but I think the grounds in between the buildings could have been done better.

2. The Mountais are blue. that bothers me, I'm not sure what effects you are doing, but the Mountain doesn't seems to match the rest of the map. It is like someone slathered some blue gel-ish thing all over your map.

3. Also, some of your mountains are right on the coastline. I don';t think that usually happens in reality, but when it does, they are usually cliffs, not mountains. so try keeping the mountains away from the coast, try putting a beach there or something.
----------

Now that I've picked on your bad parts, I will tell you what I ADORE about your maps.

1. The cities are awesome. They look realistic. Most people when making cities make this one tile thing that has maybe 4 buildings in it if you look carefully. The fact that you placed so many buildings inb the cities make it seem more real. I like that a lot.

2. The boats. The ships and docks are very well done. They are very extensive and that pleases my eye.

3. The third map of yours in the very first post with maps on it. Ilike how you made a land-bridge of sorts. it is very creative.

Hmmmmm...

I don't know, I rather liked the blue. And about the space between buildings, it's probably because in real cities that void would be filled with people. Thanks to your input, I will now be obligated to create charsets of people moving around in the cities (grrrrr)

Anyway, there is a larger issue here. After much laziness on my part, and a general lack of care on Inq's, I have finally gone to finish his mountain autotile! Remember how it wouldn't really tile right? Well, that is a thing of the past! Remember the little definition,. the low contrast in peaks and valleys? That's fixed too! BEHOLD!

If the image above does not show for you, click here.

(note: this is not a version of what I used in my screens, those are a beta version of this autotile)

It looks gorgeuos when tiled! Take a looksie, put it in your map! I'll take a screen of one of my maps with it sometime...

Unfortunately, the definition and contrast gives it something of a tiled effect. This can be solved by adding third-layer snow and other things on top of it. These tiles are yet to come.

This warrants a double post.

I have made not only a mountain autotile now, but also a much improved forest tile. This comes in a set of two, one that you tile for a forest, one that you tile inside a forest to make pathways or openings in the forest. The second one can be tiled on the same layer as the first, in the middle, and the first will tile seamlessly into it, by the wonders of my construction, no script required.

The last image is something which must be grafted into your tileset. These are openings from the pathways in the forest to the edge of the forest. Tile the pathways up to the edge, then tile the appropriate edge onto it while holding the SHIFT key (this will make the autotiles around it be nonresponsive to the tile)

If the image above does not show for you, click here.

If the image above does not show for you, click here.

If the image above does not show for you, click here.

And here is an example of what can be done with it (and yes, I'm keeping the blue mountains, don't hound me about it)

Sorry if this has been asked already (I don't know), but is there a tileset that I could use to make a town looking like Inq's oriental/muslim/whatever town in his worldmap tileset (the desert town if u prefer)?

Of course there is, Indy. You can download the customisation set off RPG Palace in the world map zip along with the main tileset and it's auto-tiles. Feel free to make some towns for the Town Submission page. Smile

Mew, although you already know what I think of your stuff you've shown, I'll just re-iterate that it all looks very funky, especially the improved graphics you've made, especially the trees.

Oh right. Good lord, not yet. Sticking Out Tongue I'm not superman. These chipsets are rather large and take ages when you count all the other stuff I have to do on top of it. So far I've almost completed an indoors tileset and then will be moving onto a city chipset (for the tudor styled towns) and then will see where I'll go from there. Until then, I'm afraid you'll just have to make do with the RTP. Sticking Out Tongue

Ah, well the towns on the world map are only supposed to be visual representations of the locations. So, if it looks persian with domes, you can presume that it will be a desert or jungle town. Of couse, if I get around to doing a city chipset to go with it, I'd no doubt make the domes then.

All of these towns are of my creation. It takes roughly two hours to make a fair sized town, not as large as the larger ones but say, the persian one, 2-3 hours. If you would like to put one together, I could help you with putting it on your tileset.

The fixed mountain version is, as of now, just existant in this thread. I don't have FTP access to the site, or anything like that, so it's up to Inquisitor if he wants to change the download.

And what do you mean by nearly perfect? If you mean that I need sparse vegetation, tree stumps, and terrain changese, I can show you that on Sunday, but if there's anything else, please do tell!

By the way, I forgot to say, the forest tile I posted can't be tiled in a single tile wide horizontal line. It just won't really work. I would have made it to work if I could have, but if I did the tiles would have had sharper corners and less shadow. Also, it was built to mesh well with the cliffs and mountains, so it can run righ against them.

Inquisitor: If you would like me to make any autotiles for your spriting creations, just tell me. God knows I'm going to remake it anyway if what you make isn't up to my lofty standards Sticking Out Tongue
