The RPG Town is still around...

Came across the RPG Town again, I'm amazed that it's still around. Very dedicated community. Went through some of the historical threads, it brought back some memories.

Are there many "oldbies" still around? I came across an idle The Jacket in the IRC, anybody else around from way back when?

There are oldbies, but they usually make one post, and then disappear for a month or two. O_o

It's a rare sighting to see an oldbie. Pirate

Haha, yeah, that's usually how I am, except I'll make one post, and disappear for a year or so.

What parts of the community are most active? the IRC I know used to be active after the forums kinda went crazy...

It's definitely trippy seeing the forum still here. And yeah, looking through old threads from a long time ago will make you all nostalgic.

Sheesh, this old place is still around?

Feels weird to come back to here after all this time. I was just curious as to why RPGPalace sent me an email regarding unread private messages.

As for the question as to whether or not any of the "oldbies" (would that include me now? weird...) are active here, I can't say. For me personally, I've always wondered if I ever would re-assimilate back into the community, but I highly doubt it. I'm not the same person I was when I was active, and I doubt I'd hold much interest here for very long.

Still, it's nice to see RPG Town alive. Maybe I will stay for a little while provided that the bitterness from all that drama from way back when isn't hanging around still.

Hmmmmm...

If it helps, I don't think most of the active members would know what drama you're talking about, so you can probably make a safe bet about the bitterness being gone.

There are four truths in life that all must come to terms with:
1. I will die and all that I am will cease to be.
2. I am born alone and will die alone. I can never truly know another.
3. The suffering in my life is my own creation. I create my reality through my choices.
4. ALL meaning is arbitrary and relative. Life is ultimately meaningless.

Since TheInquisitor has basically said to me that he is no longer interested in RPG Palace at all, it's probably just fine for old members to come back. I'm trusting that the people who behave nastily won't want to come back, though.

You got emails because of the software change. We now run on Drupal 6.19, and you got "new" private messages informing you about gaining rank after the migration.

Yeah, I figured it was something along those lines Meu.

Anyone want to update me on what's been going on here since way back when? Who's in charge, what the Palace is up to? etc?

Meustrus is the Baws in charge, with CSC running in as the moderator of the operations here...

Like a boss rap. Yes, they cuss frequently, so content advisory. O_o

SPEAKING OF WHICH....WHERE DID OUR BELOVED CSC GO?

And I don't think the palace has been up to anything at all except for the migration that just now took place. We're watching the dust settle. >_>

I'm in charge, but Maxy still pays the bills for now. Our new members have some real spirit and our game making support section is pretty active. As for non-RM stuff, there's been some good-spirited spam for a little while, one cause of which being a "Spamhunter's Guild" hunting the spambots invading the old IPB forums. Spambots were one of the primary reasons for the software change; the other is functionality. Take a look at Drupal.org and see how many different things you can do with Drupal that people have already been so nice as to code for you. It's not just mods, it's entirely new systems people have built. One could make phpBB, Facebook, Digg, a blog, or any combination thereof out of Drupal.

Now that the software change is done, I would like to get back to developing the community game. I'm thinking of how best to proceed; nearly every developer except myself is MIA but we've got plenty of fresh talent.

actually the spamhunter's guild is no longer of use.

the whole new site doesn't seem to have anymore spam to kill.... but it was good times while they lasted. (except when spam deliberatedly posted on active topics ruining them)

The project still lives!

It will take a while to see if the bots can adapt. There is still a "nuclear option" so to speak if the bots come back. For now I think the two validation systems together are enough to stop the bots.

I'm saddened to hear the Inq no longer wants anything to do with us.  For my part, both he and Maxy always seemed like a great couple of guys.  I never understood what all the hate was about.  Form what I gathered, it was residual from when Inq was a teen or something like that.  For my part, though, the few times I had the chance to converse with either of them on the IRC was actually pretty cool.  Maxy and I once had a discussion about religion that managed to be level-headed and intelligent, without resorting to any sort of anger tactics.  Not something I get often, I'll tell you.

As for the community game, I'm still more than willing to help out, Mew.  Writing, again, is my forte, but I've been working on my spriting and my mapping has actually improved greatly over recent months.  So, if you feel I can be of service, just let me know and we'll work something out.

My take on why people hated Inq is because he was good at what he did. Not out of spite, but because if anybody posted something he would criticize it. There were few things he couldn't suggest improvements for. IMO, sincere criticism is the best compliment, but most adolescents don't agree. I gather the hatred started when those people were about 13-15 years old. Ultimately, it felt to those people (and myself sometimes) that he was condescending and patronizing. Now, if those people were still around to see Furdabip...I shudder to think what would have happened.

JK, I got the promotion e-mail and was curious to see what was up.

And meu, you've been around long enough to recognize the Inq-hatin' goes a lot deeper than that. Your explanation is an oversimplification if I've ever heard one. Beyond his "personality", Inq frequently tried to manipulate people to suit his own gains and abused his power on numerous occasions. Great pixel artist though. Crazy

Eh, Inq and I never really got a long very well. He saw me as nothing more than a retarded asshole and n00b and I've always seen him as a pretentious and stuck up pig. Only on the rarest of occasions did I feel him treating me with any modicum of courtesy.

To be fair though, I really was a retarded asshole and n00b way back when and I'm sure if I traveled back in time to talk with my past self, I'd likely have the exact same impression, and have probably acted the same way.

As for why others disliked Inq, well, I honestly can't say that it had anything to do with his critiques of other people's pixel arts and a good majority of people then had very little interest in game making at that point. I for one, found his criticism of other people's work to be harsh but at least fair. Inq's personality clashed with a lot of people (which I'm sure others would agree), and though I can't recall any particular instances of this off the top of my head, but people did accuse him of being a manipulative others.

But that's all in the past now, and I doubt the new community really cares about the internet drama of the past.

Hmmmmm...

I agree that what I said was an oversimplification. I don't know everything that went on, especially since I've only been around for half the Town's life (I can't believe how long I've been here when I look back on old topics, but it's still only that much). I can understand the manipulative aspect, though, not because I ever felt like he was manipulating anyone but because I played Wolfhunt with him. He is damn good at that game.

It's really good to see some old faces posting! Must have induced nostalgia getting those emails Smile.

I've been down to meet Inq a few times now in real life (...people actually have lives outside of this forum?!?!?) and he's a great guy. The subject hasn't come up recently, but when I last breached it he said that he didn't really enjoy being persecuted over the internet, and felt that towards the end anything he did say or suggest was met with ridicule or scorn - the end line then, for him, was why bother? I think he has moved away a little from RPG Maker as of recent and has been attracted to other mediums - he's making a game in AGS which I sort of help out with on an infrequent basis, and he's gathering a following over at Pixeljoint.

I'm perhaps at a disadvantage as regards these feuds, as I never really got involved. To put it simply, I couldn't be bothered getting into arguments. Never have been! As far as Inq being manipulative, I have nothing to back this up from personal experience, unless you count his incessant pleas directed towards me to create a story in his steampunk universe Laugh (another game project he has on the cards - watch this space!).

I'm a bit glad Bip's gone. We've had more members stick around since he was banned. It was only a temporary ban, but after that he felt unwelcome and misunderstood.

Jacket, Kaiox, Zatham, Ricky, CSC, hello to you all Smile what have you all been doing with your lives the past couple of years? there was a definite split in peoples attitudes to what the forum should be, with about twice as many choosing to keep the original spirit of the town and move on - one in the pInq, two in the stink, if you will.- but I think after seeing what happened to wheedonia Inq was justified in wanting to attract new members to keep the community going and it's amazing to see this place alive after ten years. Here's to ten more Smile

@Cutthecameras: I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't figure out how to post for the life of me. Seriously, how un-intuitive can this system be? ?_? It took me literally 15 minutes to figure out where I was and how to post last time. I don't even know if this will get posted.

Wheedonia lacked any kind of committed leadership so we set a bad example for the community. I was content to pay for the webspace but lacked the time to make the board engaging. I had lots of ideas but no time/motivation to execute them.

For those wondering where it's gone, I forgot Nano/holloway was actually the one who paid for the domain name, which expired a few months back. He said he'd renew it as soon as he got some money, but after blowing any money he had on liquor, he seems to have fled to Spain. Sticking Out Tongue

In all fairness, Shiggy, do you remember the new members trickling in just before the split? "how do i make hero in rmxp"

I miss Furdabip as well.

Shiggy!  Wow, so many old faces are showing themselves.  Who's next, Psygon?  Koopa Troopa Flya Man?  Sleepy Templar?  Kamau himself?

I have to say though, I really dislike the new interface.  It may not be my place to say as I haven't been round much in the last two years.  I always preferred the Proboard (which, incidentally, is still around) out of all the incarnations of the RPG Town.

Never look back on your old Proboard posts, guys... cringe worthy to say the least.  It just goes to show you how long the Town has been around - I was 11 or 12 when I first found it back on EZBoard when Legion Saga was all the rage and 14 and 15 back in the Proboard days.  Now I'm 21, at University and actually programming real games and seriously considering a career in game design and development - an interest that started on these very boards.

One suggestion I would make is for the 'Comment' box below to show a blinking text bar when you click on the box itself, to show that it is ready to be written in. The empty box might confuse most people.

Shiggy! Oh man it's nice seeing you here again. It's crazy to think the last time I posted here actively was during middle school. Sheesh, that seemed like so long ago, and just like yesterday too at the same time. Since you asked so kindly, college treats me well enough I suppose. I've updated the version of WYMEditor to 0.5 rc2 (not sure what is was before) and the problem seems to have been fixed. I read that it was an issue with Firefox 3.6, so good job all of you for staying up-to-date with the best browser in the world!

Indeed, it shows up now. Although Youtube seems to completely ignore the fact that I have the latest version of Firefox, and instead of telling me to update, is flat out telling me to switch to Google Chrome 'cause they don't want people to browse their site with their competition. Since Youtube was bought by Google.

How do I know this? When I try to surf with Firefox, Youtube gives me the 'Lite' version of Youtube when watching videos, meaning I have next to no options to do anything other than watch videos and manage my account. Whereas I can do everything if I use their annoying browser.

Truly, Google and Youtube indeed have a anti-customer-service team working.

It does indeed Zatham. Welcome back.

Youtube isn't so bad on Google Chrome now, I can actually upload without having to go through a series of annoyingly complicated tasks.

On another note, the site's upgrade feels sleeker and has a more functional feel now I find. And the added features make it an easier outlet for its members to come and mingle, as one would say.
