RPG Maker was the first in the series to spark a large global interest. Only a short time after its un-official English release world-wide, RPG Maker 2000 saw an explosion of interests from people of all age groups. This was due to the fact that anybody could create a nice looking game with little programming experience at all! While RPG Maker 2000 holds potential for beginning game developers, its limited environment can be quite frustrating to veterans of amateur game development. Its interface is driven entirely by point and click, and there are no options for plug-ins, and no supported scripting languages. This can be seen as a crutch to many people, but for many others this software can be considered a dream come true. RPG Maker 2000 is capable of rendering Dragon Warrior-esque battles in minutes, and graphics importing allows for wonderful custom graphics. Anybody who is interested in game development, but doesn't know where to start may want to take a look at this program.

Like its predecessor, RPG Maker 2003 is rather limited on customization and features, but at the same time it contains many improvements. The most notable new feature is the addition of a side-view Final Fantasy style battle engine. This engine can be customized a bit more than the previous one. Along with that, other new features include: Cursed weapons, 40 picture limit (as opposed to previous 20), mp3 support, class systems, and a revised event editor. While this tool is much of the same, many people would rather take the side-view battle system despite it being slightly unstable. RPG Maker 2003 isn't up to par with the big boys of game development software, but its easy navigation and shallow learning curve are a great way to be introduced to the world of amateur game design.
